Compare and Contrast what John Piper is saying here in this video to Rick Warren's ideas regarding "Purpose Driven Preaching".

Very impressive. I wish there were more main stream preachers that would get it, like Piper has. That is now the third really good youtube segment I've heard from him. He also has a great short speech regarding the prosperity Gospel.
Anyways, what I love is the very end. He said that he preaches as if one of those people may go over any minute. It is a sad tragedy that so few of those mega churches, including some in the LCMS don't get that. They think it is better to preach about having a good marriage or sex life. Not realizing that those who are not married will channel out or feel bad about not being married, and reminded of their loneliness.
In the process they never hear the Gospel. That week they die. They didn't improve the marriage they never had, and they didn't hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They couldn't come to faith. Now they are in hell. Piper has it right, he will be held accountable when he screws up. So will I when I become a pastor.

Piper is right on the mark with this one. Unfortunately though, preaching the Word (as Paul charges to Timothy) doesn't have the draw as does comedy, drama, and entertainment. We have to remember there's staff salaries that need to be paid, A/C bills can run into the thousands of dollars, and you can't buy those new HD cameras at the big box store.
As Neil in the previous comment mentions, the Gospel is omitted in order to meet the needs of the congregation. Pastors are very aware of the local community demographics and cater to their (worldly) needs. You wouldn't put a snow cone stand in the north pole or sell jet skis in the desert so why would you preach about the coming judgement and the need to repent to people that seem to have it all together?
